M104, Spitzer
M104 is a well-known galaxy in the constellation of Virgo. It lies at a distance of 50 million light years and is named after a well-known Mexican hat.

This image is a composite of an optical image from the HST and an infra-red image taken by Spitzer, a satellite in orbit above the Earth. The two panels at the bottom show the individual images, HST on the left, Spitzer on the right.

In the Spitzer image, the light from stars within the dust lane can be seen easily and this ring appears very bright, in contrast to the optical view where the star light from this ring is blocked out by the dust.
