M104 is a well-known galaxy in the constellation of Virgo. It lies at a
distance of 50 million light years and is
named after a well-known Mexican hat.
This image was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, orbiting above the Earth every 90 minutes. The image shows a large dust lane, visible as a thick dark line running around the middle of the disk. This dust blocks visible light from the centre of the galaxy, making the edges appear dark.
